Give to Gain: You Go Girl!

By Esther Agwang – MBA MCIM, Marketing, Communications & Media Viability Consultant

Ladies, sisters, let’s come together for some tea and chat about a subject close to our hearts—digital marketing. In this era of technological transformation, women are emerging as powerful contributors, innovators, and leaders. Although historically underrepresented, women’s presence and influence in digital sectors are rising, driving progress and fostering diversity in technology, media, and business.

And yes, women today are breaking barriers in fields such as software development, digital marketing, cybersecurity, data science, and artificial intelligence, among others, thereby expanding the talent pool entering the digital workforce.

Despite progress, as a developing economy, we still face daunting challenges. According to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, 46.4% of males owned mobile phones, while 40.7% of females did. Internet penetration remains low, with 18.5 million mobile internet connections and 229,000 fixed internet users (Uganda Communications Commission Q4 2025 Market Performance Report). Women (7.6%) use the internet less than men (10.6%) (National Population and Housing Census 2024). Thus, women in digital face challenges, including gender bias, pay gaps, and underrepresentation in leadership roles. Nonetheless, the rise of online communities and networks is making it easier for women to connect and support one another.

When it comes to success stories and role models, I won’t put out fancy names because, right here, are ordinary women winging it on the streets of Kampala. From the mobile money vendor to the boardroom strategist, every girl in this city, nation deserves a bouquet of roses for their contribution. Women bring unique perspectives and problem-solving approaches, creating products and services that better serve a global audience.

Our future looks bright. As more organisations recognise the value of inclusion, opportunities for women will continue to expand. Closing the gender gap in technology will require sustained effort from individuals, companies, and policymakers. By championing diversity, providing access to education, and celebrating female role models, we can ensure women remain at the forefront of digital innovation. Women in digital are shaping a more inclusive and dynamic future for all.

Along this promising future are men who have stood with the sisters, starting with the brothers at Uganda Digital Society, who advance digital skills development, establish professional standards, and promote strategic collaboration. Men as mentors, sponsors, colleagues, and employers play a pivotal role in supporting women’s growth in digital spaces.

With these developments, there’s reason to celebrate.

This International Women’s Day, be part of the Uganda Digital Society event under the theme, ‘Women in Digital: Give to Gain’. Don’t miss the line-up of female speakers, including a keynote address from Sharon Sanya Mirembe (Digital Communications Officer, UTB Uganda), and panellists like Rhoda Muisima (Founder, Phose Creatives), Gloria Wanyenze (Advocate) and Gladys Namyalo (Social Media Producer, Nation Media Group – NTV UG). Against a backdrop of a relaxed atmosphere, the women will delve into topics such as sustainability, wellbeing, and the future of women in digital careers; regulation, law, and women’s rights; growth, visibility, and leadership in digital spaces; and from entry-level to opportunity.
